The Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering annually hosts a NSF-sponsored Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program. Participating REU students will have the opportunity to work with professors and graduate students in multidisciplinary research areas focused on sustainability as it relates to the fields of chemical and environmental engineering, biosystems engineering, materials science and engineering, optical science, and mechanical engineering. Typical projects include: exploring the development of alternative chemistries for semiconductor manufacturing processes, chemical use minimization, sensors, alternative fuels, process control and instrumentation, and the treatment and recycle of water and wastewater in clean rooms with state-of-the-art equipment.
In addition to this invaluable research experience, another integral part of the REU program is to give students the opportunity to enhance their oral and written communication skills. To facilitate this goal, students hold meetings and teleconferences throughout the summer giving them the opportunity to present their ongoing research in a student-created slide presentation format as well as the opportunity to interact with their peers in both informal and professional settings. At the close of the program, REU students are required to write a research paper summarizing the results of their research projects. Student bios and links to abstracts from the summer 2007 REU program are presented in the tabs below.
